Peter Tourin has been well known since the 1970s for his decorative marquetry and fine woodworking in the reproduction of historic bowed string instruments. Peter led in the research and hand- crafted production of musical instruments for more than 20 years at the Tourin Musica and became recognized as a world leading instrument maker. Peter began his career as an apprentice with Frank Hubbard, harpsichord builder in Waltham and with Donald Warnock, string instrument builder in Princeton, MA.
Peter is shown here beginning work on a harpsichord and adding the finishing touches to the scroll of a highly decorated viola da gamba.
Applying the skills practiced in a lifetime of woodworking, Peter handcrafts unique wood sculptural projects for homes and businesses from his workshops in New Hampshire and on Maui, Hawaii. In a recent project he designed, created and installed a decorative sapele and mango wood marquetry screen with granite countertop to transform a bulky air conditioning unit into a beautiful and useful display area on a small balcony.
